Who are Merseycats

Merseycats was founded in 1989 following a Memorial Show held for the late John Banks, ex-drummer with The Merseybeats, at The Montrose Club in 1988.

The show was organised by the members of many of the original Mersey Beat groups of the 60’s and a substantial amount of money was raised at the show.

All of those involved in the event decided that the money raised should be used to help sick and disadvantaged children within the Merseyside area, which continues to be our aim to this day.

The inaugural meeting of Merseycats, as it would now be known, was held at the Penny Lane Wine Bar on Friday 20th January 1989. At this first meeting there were the first 40 members, consisting of musicians from original Mersey Beat bands, their wives, roadies, friends and supporters.

Since that first meeting the organisation has continued to grow and now stands at nearly 1000 members and countless other supporters and friends from all over the world. All members, past and present, now wear their Ambrose Mogg membership badge with pride.

Now, in 2025, we have our weekly jam night every Thursday at The Oldy Club at the Old Roan in Aintree, where we have been for many years now, and we continue to welcome musicians, friends and supporters from all over the world to come along and enjoy a night of live music with like-minded people.

Here you will find many types of music played and everyone giving the best of order and appreciation to all who attend.

We now managed to raise an average of over £15,000 per annum, all of which is given away to sick and disadvantaged children and small local charities within the Merseyside area and we are always looking for new bands and people to come along to our jam night and see what we are all about, with the hope that they will want to join us in our efforts to raise money to carry on Merseycats great work.

We raise the bulk of our money from the jam night and other major events throughout the year and we also receive sponsorship and support from local businesses and individuals, not always in the form of a donation, but by providing us with the musical and sound equipment we need to enable us to keep raising the money for the children we support, and venues to have our fundraisers including The Cavern Club hopefully for years to come.

We would like to invite people to join us at The Oldy Club any Thursday from 8:00 pm, entrance only £1 for members and £2 for non-members, so that we can keep the name and ideals of Merseycats alive.
